Get your drumming on with YuNiOn! 🥁 In this family-friendly workshop, you’ll learn different Japanese rhythm techniques, about a variety of Japanese percussion instruments and how to replicate their sounds with objects found around the home.
This video was originally streamed on The Japan Foundation, Sydney Facebook page on July 25, 2020 as part of the Issho Editions online event program. More info: https://jpf.org.au/events/issho-editi...
To join in the fun, prepare items from your kitchen such as a low and high sound to represent the drums (taiko), scrapper or a shaker sound to represent the sasara, and a high sound to represent the kane (Japanese bell).
Here are some item suggestions. If you don't have them all, don't worry - you can improvise!
Low drum sound = Large bucket/large pot + 2 x sticks (sticks from the yard or 2 x wooden spoons)
Small drum sound =
Small bucket/small pot or saucepan + 2 x sticks (sticks from the yard or 2 x wooden spoons or 2 x chopsticks (strong) or 2 x butter knives)
Grater/scraper-type sound = Cheese grater or something with a serrated edge + 1 x stick to scrap the instrument.
Small metal sound = Small bowl/saucepan lid + 1 x stick (1 x chopstick (strong) or 1 x butter knife)
