Metal hydrides are compounds composed of metal atoms and hydrogen atoms bonded together. They possess unique properties that make them useful in various chemical reactions, including reductions. Some common metal hydrides used for reduction reactions include lithium aluminum hydride (LiAlH4) and sodium borohydride (NaBH4).
The reduction process involves the transfer of hydride ions (H-) from the metal hydride to the substrate molecule, resulting in the gain of electrons by the substrate. This leads to the reduction of certain functional groups within the molecule. Commonly reduced functional groups include carbonyl compounds (aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids), imines, and nitriles, among others.
