Porcupine expert Uldis Roze gave us a tour of his Catskills "porcupine house," which he built to monitor porcupine populations. The salt-impregnated slats on the sides of the house draw porcupines in, and they're trapped in a cooler for a 20-minute anesthetized observation. Stick-chewing activity also indicates when porcupines are out in numbers, and when they're in hiding due to the presence of their primary predator, the fisher.
