View 8 different versions of Alizarin Crimson and commonly used replacements which are more lightfast. It is a great sorrow that the original version of Alizarin Crimson - pigment PR83 - is fugitive or not lightfast. This means it will change its hue or fade under normal indoor lighting conditions. This precludes it from being used in a work of art that is sold and or displayed. It can still be used in a sketchbook or if the work will be preserved digitally. However, many of us create work that is meant to be displayed and enjoyed! We want our work to last. Here are some commonly recommended (and some more obscure) replacements that are more lightfast than PR83.
Here I swatch these 8 watercolor paints for you to see:
Alizarin Crimson from Winsor & Newton PR83
Rose Madder from Holbein or HWC PR83
Pyrrole Rubin from Holbein PR264
Permanent Alizarin Crimson from M. Graham PR264
Permanent Alizarin Crimson from QOR by Golden PR177
Carmine Lake Extra from Old Holland PR177, PV19, and PBr23
Perylene Maroon from Holbein PR179
Maroon Perylene from M. Graham PR179
Hopefully after seeing these paints swatched out, you will have more of an understanding or which ones would work for you in your art practice. My goal is to save you some frustration and money!
