Welcome Classic Lovers!!
Well well well, a lovely classy Mercedes Benz W108 manufactured in the year 1968!! It's a 280 S which has an inline 6 2.8L engine with a stick shift 4 speed manual transmission.
It arrived to us on flatbed as the dual Zenith carbs had given up the ghost long ago. We did some compression tests and the figures were not appealing. 1 cylinder had 65 psi of compression which is half of what is normally considered good (120+) Half of the cylinders had less than 100 psi and the best had 124 psi.
If the compression is that bad, why is this classic still responding well?
Being a 6 cylinder engine, it has a great advantage, since it has power strokes every 120 crank degrees, it means it has 60 degrees power overlaps. A full power stroke is 180 degrees so then I subtract the 120 to get the famous 60 degrees. This means that, most of the engine run time, there are 2 cylinders on power stroke for 60 crank degrees. This helps the low compression cylinders create some notable power!!
We did the full EFI conversion using the Voltarent EFI kit which brought the engine back to life with some respectable power. 130kph on an engine that has low compression says alot. The Voltarent ECU is able to deliver power, better fuel efficiency and reliability.
The engine definately needs a rebuild to restore the actual power needed to push it past 200 kph, if the owner is willing to risk :)
