With a major winter storm expected to move into the Carolinas within days, Duke Energy says it is preparing for potential outages and is asking customers to take steps now to reduce energy use and prepare their homes.
Company officials say ice, not snow, poses the greatest risk to power lines during winter storms.
“When you think of snow, it takes up to six inches of snow in order to impact tree limbs to fall on power lines and cause outages,” Duke Energy spokesperson Caroline Fountain said. “It only takes a quarter of an inch of ice to do that same thing.”
Fountain said Duke Energy’s storm response plan includes positioning crews ahead of severe weather and relying on its self-healing grid technology to limit outages. The system automatically reroutes power when a line goes down, restoring electricity to most customers while crews respond. #Snow #Ice #Charlotte
