The City of Mbombela and the Water and Sanitation Department have issued an urgent evacuation alert for areas downstream of the Senteeko Dam near Barberton. This after heavy rains exposed dangerous erosion of the dam’s spillway. While the main embankment remains intact, officials warn the compromised structure poses an imminent risk of failure, potentially releasing 1.82 million cubic metres of water, according to dam safety head Wally Ramokopa.
