Florida Fish & Wildlife and Coast Guard vessels, all with emergency lights on, were managing traffic for the Blue Angels Airshow in the Pensacola Land Cut. A black pontoon boat, operated by a man later identified as [REDACTED], was seen traveling at planing speed past the emergency vessels—a violation of the slow-speed, minimum-wake rule within 300 feet.
Despite sirens and repeated loud commands to turn, [REDACTED] continued toward Ft. McRee, claiming sufficient water depth. His navigation forced a pursuing officer’s boat onto a sandbar. The officer eventually boarded the pontoon and directed [REDACTED] to beach it.
On board, the officer noted seven life jackets and other required safety gear. A bucket full of empty beer cans was visible. [REDACTED] had a strong odor of alcohol, bloodshot eyes, and appeared flushed. After initially refusing, he performed seated field sobriety tests.
Based on the results, he was arrested for Boating Under the Influence. He resisted boarding the patrol vessel but was eventually handcuffed and transported. After being read his rights, he admitted to drinking beer but refused a breath test. He was charged with BUI and resisting arrest without violence.
