Proposed bill would block lawsuits blaming third parties for marital breakups

A proposed law could make it nearly impossible for people to sue a third party they believe heavily damaged — or even caused the end of — their marriage.

The bill comes as renewed attention is focused on “alienation of affection” lawsuits, following the release of a new Netflix documentary, Evil Influencer: The Jodi Hildebrandt Story. The documentary highlights the case and allegations from multiple individuals who claim marital counseling advice led to the collapse of their relationships, including the high-profile case involving Kevin and Ruby Franke.

Under the proposed legislation, Utah would formally prohibit lawsuits that accuse a third party — such as a therapist, counselor, or religious advisor — of interfering in a marriage. While Utah currently allows such civil claims, the proposed bill would eliminate that option moving forward.
