Founded by the Umbrians, starting from 299 BC. the center became a Roman municipality with the name of Narnia, a toponym deriving from the term NAR, the name attributed to the Nera river in the classical tradition. During the era of the barbarian invasions, Narni suffered long-lasting looting by the Goths of Totila in the context of the events linked to the Greek-Gothic war.
After having been a Longobard steward, it became part of the possessions of the church in 726 AD.
In the 12th century, the city experienced a period of great economic and cultural growth which saw its power and influence increase in the region, so much so that it collided first with Pope Paschal II (1112) and later also with Federico Barbarossa (1167). , from which it was subsequently sacked. During the fourteenth century, it was a feud between the Orsini.
With the looting suffered by the troops of Charles V in 1527 an inexorable decline began for Narni. From the seventeenth century, it became part of the Papal State.

There are many things to see, starting with the imposing fortress of Albornoz (the fortress that overlooks the town from a height of 332 meters above sea level), the Romanesque cathedral of San Giovenale (12th century), the church of Santa Maria in Pensole (1175) and that of San Francesco (XIV century). Also noteworthy are the civil architectures above all the Palazzo dei Priori, with a civic tower and fourteenth-century loggia, the Palazzo del Podestà (town hall) built between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and the fascinating and evocative underground Narni.
