The Vasa Museum Tour - Stockholm – Sweden

The Vasa Museum is a maritime museum in Stockholm, Sweden. It is one of the most impressive museums in the world with the 17th century warship.
The Vasa was a warship built for King Gustav II Adolphus of Sweden, of the Vasa dynasty, between 1626 and 1628.
It was a magnificent ship with three masts carrying ten sails, with a height of 52 meters, a length of 69 meters and a weight of 1200 tons.
However, Vasa was dangerously unstable and top-heavy with too much weight in the upper structure of the hull.
After many delays, the Vasa was ready for her maiden voyage on a calm day with a light breeze.
It was 4 p.m. on August 10th, 1628, and the Vasa ship had barely left the docks of Stockholm harbor ( Three Crowns Castle ) on its maiden voyage. Only 1300 meters into its voyage, a light gust of wind toppled the ship over on its side.
The gun ports of the ‘Vasa’. When sailing on its maiden journey the lower gun ports were open, as they had fired a salute, and a gust of wind tilted the ship so that water flowed into the interior of the ship.
Vasa toppled sideways and quickly sank only 120 meters (393 feet) from land in full view of a crowd of thousands.
As water flooded through the gun portals of the ship, it sank in the shallow waters of Stockholm harbor and lay there at 32 meters deep, forgotten.
In 1956, the Vasa ship was found by Anders Franzen, a Swedish marine technician and amateur naval archaeologist.
It was salvaged between 1959-61 and can be found today in the museum that was specially built for it.
More than 95 percent of the ship is original, and it is decorated with hundreds of carved sculptures.
