A towering dust cloud caused havoc in Arizona on Monday, grounding flights and leaving thousands without power. We caught this video from our balcony the dust storm covering the Camelback Mountain in Scottsdale.

The slow-moving cloud — known as a haboob — hit parts of Phoenix and Arizona City, 60 miles to the southeast, late Monday afternoon. (8-25-2025)

What Happened on August 25, 2025?

On Monday, August 25, 2025, a powerful haboob—a severe dust storm—swept through the Phoenix metro area.
• The dust wall originated from thunderstorms near the Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson, sweeping northward and plunging parts of Phoenix into darkness with visibility dropping to nearly zero.  
• Wind gusts were intense, reaching up to 94 mph in San Tan Valley and around 70 mph at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. 
• The storm knocked out power for 55,000 homes and businesses across Maricopa County, while also grounding flights and inflicting some damage at the airport.   
• Rain and lightning followed in the storm’s wake, delivering localized showers that offered a temporary respite from the otherwise dry monsoon season—though these rains weren’t enough to significantly alter long-term drought conditions.   
• Witnesses recounted harrowing experiences: darkness enveloped the area, drivers described pulling safe over because “you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face,” and dust permeated even closed vehicles and homes.
