Can you install a heavy bag hook to the joist of your basement? I believe you can if you do it the right way. No, I am not offering any guarantee. Every basement situation is different. Ours doesn't even use the solid wood joist. It uses those engineered I-beams which don't offer much lateral support. I am actually moving the hook from the load beam. Load beam is the ideal option, that, or a free-standing hook. But I just don't have enough space. The area is between the supporting post and the wall and it is low. I am always hitting the top end of the bag and can't do much movement. Although I have concerns, I decided to hook it to the joist where I have enough space. See how I did it in this video, with enough consideration of swaying movement and top-load support. I have a 245-pound heavy bag.
