Baby, Don’t Stop Pxxin’ On Me Now - Cliff Darnell (1961)
Cliff Darnell was born Clifton Eugene Darnell in Camden, New Jersey, in 1920, the son of a shoe repairman and a church organist. After crooning for the Army Band during World War II, he spent the 1950s working smoky lounges and supper clubs up and down the East Coast, becoming known for his sharp sharkskin suits and silky baritone voice. Cliff developed a small but loyal following, thanks to his dramatic delivery and vintage romantic aesthetic.
In 1961, Cliff went into the studio to record what he hoped would be his big breakthrough: 'Baby, Don’t Stop Pxxin’ On Me Now'. Some say the producer misread his lyric sheet, others swear Cliff believed the metaphor about “gxlden shxwers” was perfectly poetic. Either way, the result was a deadpan, over-the-top lounge ballad about love, pee, and devotion - delivered with total sincerity.
Though the record faded quickly after its release, 'Baby, Don’t Stop Pxxin’ On Me Now' has since become a cult classic, rediscovered by vinyl collectors, crate diggers, and social media fans who appreciate its absurd lyrics retro supper club vibe, and outsider charm. Today it stands as one of the strangest and most unforgettable novelty love songs of the 1960s.
