This video shows a DIY can crusher you can make using a garage door opener motor and common parts. The entire unit is about 40 inches long and about 12.75 inches wide.
All the parts came from home depot except the garage door motor unit and the bike chain wheel.
You just need to be able to cut the metal and drill holes. I used a small drill press and chopsaw, but you could use a hacksaw and hand drill if you had to.
