The Maeslantkering closes the doors for the storm on 3 January 2018. The Maeslantkering which closed for the first time since 2007. The five flood defenses (the Dutch IJssel barrier, Hartel barrier, Oosterscheldekering, Ramspol storm surge barrier and Maeslantkering) were closed on the same day. This has never happened before.
The delta works in the Netherlands (Holland) is the largest flood protection project in the world.
