Turkoman Rugs are made by the Turkoman nomads originally from the Afghan and Pakistan region who later on immigrated to Iran and the Turkmenistan region bringing with them the rug designs and started producing them in Iran.
Most of these rugs are made with wool foundation and wool pile. This wool is sourced from the famous Karakul sheep, an indigenous breed that have two types of fleece growing at the same time. The outer fleece is thicker and coarser while the inner fleece is softer and finer.
These rugs feature rows and rows of gul motifs, an octagonal-shaped flower. Gul in Farsi means flower.
Older Turkoman rugs have specific designs for each type of Tribe they came from. Modern Turkoman rugs show more variations. Weavers freely incorporate guls from any tribe into their own creations, without any restrictions.
A special type of Turkoman rug come from the Yomut region in Turkmenistan which uses silk as a foundation of the rug. These rugs are the highest quality Turkoman rugs you can buy.
