Soybean emergence has been variable and delayed across the state, but before making replant decisions growers should first assess what caused the delay. There are three issues that have contributed to slow emergence.
Once you have identified the cause of the variable and delayed emergence, you need to determine the number of viable plants per acre. This is important, as healthy emerged or emerging plants from the original planting dates have excellent yield potential and should be preserved if possible.
When replanting, MSU Extension Soybean Educator Mike Staton, recommends selecting planting rates that will supplement the existing stand and not totally replace it. Aim for supplemental planting rates that will produce a combined final stand of 110,000 to 130,000 plants per acre.
