A week ago, someone asked me what it was like to teach in Asia.
I told her two things,
“Hong Kong students are awesome. They are very hardworking.”
“There are no viola jokes in Hong Kong.”
Here’s a clip featuring some of my Asian students collaborating with the beautiful Philharmonie der Universität Wien chorus, performing Beethoven’s 9th symphony together. We did this performance in the summer of 2019. Little did we know that the occasion would have been the last opportunity on a performance stage for many of us before a very long wait.
But indeed,
“All people become brothers,
Where Thy gentle wing abides.”
And in light of the recent event, the late Leonard Bernstein reminds us,
“This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.”
