Eerie photos offer a glimpse inside of an abandoned Liverpool city centre cinema that once welcomed thousands on Lime Street. Opening as the Forum in 1931, The ABC cinema entertained audiences for nearly 70 years and welcomed generations through its doors.
The Grade II-listed art deco structure became The Cannon in 1986, but closed its doors in 1998 with a final showing of Casablanca. Since closing, it has stood silent and has cut an increasingly dilapidated figure in the heart of Liverpool ever since.
Through the decades, many happy memories were made at the cinema - and we recently rediscovered one photo of outside the site in 2003, courtesy of our archive Mirrorpix, when films like The Adventures of Pinocchio were screened. Earlier this week, the ECHO reported how the historic city centre building has been "tinned-up" and described as a "shameful" first impression of Liverpool.
Metal sheeting has appeared around the doors to the former ABC Cinema in order to increase its security, as a new tenant is sought to take over the building. Back in 2016, after nearly 20 years without movement, plans to convert the old cinema into a state-of-the-art music and entertainment venue were approved by the local authority but they have not come to fruition.
