Many people approach preparedness from scarcity. At TSPC we have always pushed back on that. Preparing from fear blinds you to the good in the world. Bad things happen and worse things can happen, but fear is not a foundation for resilience.

We tend to romanticize those who lived through the great depression, especially people at the bottom of society. My grandparents lived through it and what they taught me was simple. It was hard. Very hard. As a kid I never thought to ask what would have made it easier. They taught me how they adapted, but the real question is how to reduce suffering, not just endure it. I think their answer would have been to build more wealth during the good years before the crash.

We talk about the great depression as history, but did we ever fully recover. The market did not truly recover from the 1929 crash until 1985, and long term stock returns measured in purchasing power are far lower than advertised.

So ask yourself. Was it easier for the average worker to afford a home and raise a family in 1985 or today in 2025. Which leads to two core questions. Did the great depression really end when World War II began. And if not, have we simply adapted to survive in a system that started declining before we were born.
