On this remote fall journey, we take on the Tusc-Stone Loop — a roughly 10-mile loop that links together the Tuscarora and Standing Stone Trails, deep in the mountains surrounding Cowans Gap State Park. This hike had it all: steep climbs, remote valleys, water features, boulder fields, and some of the best fall foliage I’ve ever seen.
We kicked off the day by climbing up Tuscarora Mountain, hiking its rugged ridgeline before dropping nearly 1,000 feet into a wild, overgrown valley. From there, we followed a scenic creek before making our final push up Cove Mountain via the Standing Stone Trail — topping out with views of Cowans Gap Lake and a landscape on fire with autumn color.
This loop is a hidden gem for those looking for challenge, solitude, and raw Pennsylvania beauty. Climbing two mountains in one day isn’t easy, but if you time it right in the fall… it’s unforgettable.
