This memorial was uploaded at the exact minute Empress of Ireland left port for the final time.
---
On May 28, 1914, at approximately 4:30 PM, the Canadian Pacific ocean liner RMS Empress of Ireland departed Quebec City, bound for Liverpool.
Commanding Empress of Ireland during this voyage was the 40-year-old Henry G. Kendall.
Kendall had been appointed Captain of the ship earlier that month.
There were 1,477 passengers and crew members onboard Empress of Ireland during this voyage.
This photograph of Empress of Ireland was captured as the ship was leaving Quebec City.
Little did anybody know that this would be the final time that Empress of Ireland would ever be photographed.
---
Once the ship left Quebec City, she sailed through the St. Lawrence River.
After that, she would head out into the Atlantic Ocean.
However, fate is a joker, as the Empress would never make it into the Atlantic Ocean.
Just a few hours later, Empress of Ireland would be involved in a collision and sunk.
Of the 1,477 passengers and crew members onboard, 1,012 of them would be lost.
The sinking of Empress of Ireland remains the greatest loss of life onboard a single Canadian shipwreck.
RIP to all those who lost their lives 111 years ago during the sinking of Empress of Ireland on May 29, 1914.
May They Never Be Forgotten.
