To break out of the habit of just playing through memorized shapes on the guitar neck, I like to isolate scales to one string. This helps me create more lyrical lines. It also sounds similar to playing with a slide. I hear Derek Trucks play like this w/ out a slide all the time. In this video, I show how this concept can apply to breaking out of the familiar pentatonic box shapes.
