Frank Ferera is best known as an incredibly prolific Hawaiian steel guitarist of the 1910s and 1920s, making hundreds of records over a 15-year period from 1915 to 1930. Although there are some gems in his discography on steel guitar, many of his records are somewhat mundane, or at least pretty similar to each other.
However, I have recently come upon a couple of records of Ferera performing solo on ukulele, which are really groovy and interesting, and very early for ukulele solo records, perhaps some of the earliest solo recordings on the instrument. Here are two 78s recorded in 1922-23 on Columbia and Cameo that I’ve acquired recently, each one featuring a hula and a waltz. Great playing, groovy, charming, and unique! Hope you enjoy!
