The Irish have traditionally had deep love and respect for those who devote themselves to learning, seeing it as one of the greatest contributions one can make in this life. Here at the start of September, that old rhythm of going back to school feels like a kind of homecoming, an idea borne out by the Irish language words for "student." Today, let’s talk about that familiarity and intimacy enshrined in the traditional Irish view of learning. In addition, I'll share some encouragement and exhortation as we begin another year of learning.
Question: Do you identify as a learner? What will you be learning in this next school year cycle? Do you have a “dúil mhór” – a great love of learning?
WORDS AND PHRASES
Ní hualach do dhuine an léann. = Learning is no burden to a person.
Léann = learning, scholarship
Mac léinn = a student (male; literally "a son of learning")
Iníon léinn = female student (literally "a daughter of learning")
Dalta scoile = a student (literally, a “fosterling of school”)
Dúil sa léann = a love of learning
Is mór í a dhúil sa léann = He is a great student (literally, his desire for learning is great)
Duine léannta = a learned person
Ba mhór ar fad an léann a bhí air = He was a man of great learning
