Sally of Monticello The Slave Jefferson Rped for 38 Years While Writing About Liberty
Paris, 1789. Sally Hemings, age 16, is pregnant with Thomas Jefferson's child. Under French law she could claim freedom and never return to slavery. Instead, she negotiates: return to Virginia as his concubine, but all her children will be freed at age 21. She agrees. For the next 38 years, Sally will bear Jefferson's children while remaining enslaved. When he dies in 1826, he frees her children as promised—but not Sally herself.
