I was invited to try out this brand new A320neo flight simulator at Aeropark Budapest, and I specifically requested that I do not receive any instruction before sitting on the First Officer's seat. The wind was a 20 knot crosswind from the right, and turbulence was selected to moderate, occasionally heavy.
The A320 is highly automated, compared to the Boeing 737 which is conventional, yet absence of a direct link to the flight controls proved to be a significant challenge, flying-wise. The A320 felt considerably slower to respond, as the sidestick does not directly manipulate the flight controls, but rather sends pitch and roll requirements to relevant computers. The fact I only previously flew non-Fly-by-Wire aircraft meant that I was still trying to control it as a conventional Boeing, which led to over-controlling in pitch and roll, due to the fact that before one command was realised, I was already sending another one! Despite the challenges, will I successfully land back on runway 31L, in 20 knot crosswinds and moderate to heavy turbulence and live to tell the tale?
