Jordan: ancient sands

Petra is truly an extraordinary place, lost in time. The ancient Nabatean city was forgotten for hundreds of years, hidden in a remote valley in the heart of southern Jordan. Today, it is invaded by thousands of tourists every day. But it remains a magical place, especially for those who manage to get there early, before the organized groups. The walk through the siq, the narrow canyon that leads to the city, is long and thrilling. In total silence, you experience the fascination of discovering a distant and impenetrable world. Then, suddenly, the majestic façade of the Treasury appears, carved into the rock, right there at the end of the siq, placed there to impress, today as it was two thousand years ago. Petra is literally carved into the rock, a thousand shades of red. You climb the rock stairways to explore the royal tombs, entering and exiting caves and palace rooms.

Further south lies Wadi Rum, Lawrence of Arabia's desert. The scenery is spectacular. On battered Bedouin jeeps, or, more romantically, on camels, you cross the red sands, speed beneath the imposing sheer mountains, the jebels, climb stone arches and sand dunes, admire the petroglyphs, until the magical moment of sunset in the desert. Sitting on a warm rock, your eyes gaze out over infinity, the temperature drops, the light magically changes. The silence is absolute. Then, gradually, the first stars appear.

Petra è davvero un luogo straordinario, fuori dal tempo. L’antica città dei Nabatei fu dimenticata per centinaia di anni, nascosta in una remota valle nel cuore della Giordania meridionale. Oggi è invasa ogni giorno da migliaia di turisti. Ma resta un posto magico, soprattutto per chi riesce ad arrivarci presto, prima dei gruppi organizzati. La camminata nel siq, lo stretto canyon che porta alla città, è lunga ed emozionante. Nel totale silenzio, si vive il fascino della scoperta di un mondo lontano e impenetrabile. Poi, all’improvviso, compare la maestosa facciata del Tesoro, scavato nella pietra, proprio li’, alla fine del siq, messo li’ per impressionare, oggi come duemila anni fa. Petra è tutta letteralmente scavata nella roccia, dalle mille sfumature del rosso. Si sale sulle scalinate di roccia per esplorare le tombe reali, entrando e uscendo da grotte e stanze dei palazzi.

Più a sud c’è il Wadi Rum, il deserto di Lawrence d’Arabia. Lo scenario è spettacolare. Sulle scassatissime jeep dei beduini, o, in modo più romantico, sui cammelli, si attraversano le sabbie rosse, si sfreccia sotto le imponenti montagne a picco, i jebel, si scalano archi di pietra e dune di sabbia, si ammirano i petroglifici, fino al magico momento del tramonto nel deserto. Seduti su una roccia calda, gli occhi spaziano sull’infinito, la temperatura scende, la luce cambia magicamente. Il silenzio è assoluto. Poi, gradualmente, compaiono le prime stelle.
