Serving classic Ukrainian food like borscht, pierogi, goulash, and more, Veselka has been a well-known spot for Eastern European fare since it opened in 1954. The classic Manhattan restaurant has been a favorite for decades, but has gained in notoriety in recent years as it's become a symbol of hope for Ukrainians after the Russian invasion of Ukraine—so much so that the restaurant was recently the subject of a documentary.

We visited Veselka (whose name means "Rainbow" in Ukrainian,) on a cold December day. It was the perfect weather for enjoying the restaurant's hearty food—and a long line outside meant we were were extra chilly and hungry by the time we went inside!
