Air traffic noise has long been one of the most critical environmental challenges associated with airports and urban areas nearby. Yet, the true impact of aircraft noise extends beyond decibels—it shapes residents’ perceptions, satisfaction, and behavior.

In this lecture, Prof. Marco Antônio Silva introduces a conceptual framework for understanding air traffic noise nuisance, focusing on the non-acoustic factors that influence how people perceive and respond to aircraft noise. Drawing on an extensive literature review and ongoing research, the framework connects indicators such as perceived noise, satisfaction with the residential area, daily activity disruption, and attitudes toward airports and mitigation measures.

The session aims to bridge engineering, behavioral science, and urban planning to guide policymakers and airport managers in developing more holistic and sustainable noise management strategies.
