Born into a wealthy slave-owning family in 1810, Clay made a radical break from his Southern roots and became one of the most vocal white abolitionists in the country. At a time when even whispering anti-slavery sentiments in Kentucky could get you killed, Clay published an anti-slavery newspaper called The True American—which was literally attacked by a mob and shut down. Did that stop him? Not even close.

He carried pistols and a bowie knife into Congress. He dueled pro-slavery politicians. He survived multiple assassination attempts—including one where he killed six attackers while badly wounded. Later, he helped secure the Union by defending Washington, D.C., during the Civil War and was appointed Minister to Russia by President Lincoln. Oh, and he helped negotiate the deal for Alaska.
