Attorney General Pam Bondi is testifying on Capitol Hill Tuesday amid mounting concerns that the Justice Department under her leadership is being weaponized to go after President Trump's perceived enemies.
In an ongoing hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Bondi defended her post as America's top law enforcement official and repeatedly pushed back on criticism, instead claiming that previous presidential administrations run by Democrats have politicized the DOJ.
"I took office with two main goals, to end the weaponization of justice and return the department to its core mission of fighting violent crime," Bondi said in her opening statement. "While there is more work to do, I believe in eight short months we have made tremendous progress towards those ends."
While Republican lawmakers have largely commended Bondi's performance in the job, Democrats on the panel have argued that she has improperly used the agency to protect Trump and carry out his agenda.
"Our nation's top law enforcement agency has become a shield for the president and his political allies when they engage in misconduct," said Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, the committee's top Democrat.
