Germany Student Visa Crisis: Why Hundreds of Indian Students Face Sudden Deportation

Hundreds of Indian students studying in Germany are facing a sudden and devastating crisis — possible deportation — despite entering the country legally. The problem centres on the International University of Applied Sciences in Berlin, a private institution with thousands of Indian students enrolled.

German authorities have reinterpreted IU’s hybrid degree programmes, classifying them as distance learning rather than full on-campus education. Under German immigration law, distance learning does not qualify for a student residence permit. A court ruling backed this view, triggering deportation notices for students already in Germany.

To make matters worse, Germany has scrapped its low-cost visa appeal mechanism, leaving affected students with limited and expensive legal options. Many have already returned to India, while others face financial ruin after taking large education loans.

Experts warn this is a wake-up call for Indian families investing life savings in overseas education. As education consultant Mayank Maheshwari told India Today, international education works only when universities, regulators, and visa authorities remain aligned. When that alignment breaks, students suffer.
