As the US shifts its global priorities to the Asia-Pacific, Europe is facing a new reality in defense: It must now provide its own security on its own. This is both a historical rupture and a strategic transformation process. The countries of the continent will either replace the US in NATO or establish an independent security architecture by establishing a European army.

There are currently 1.5 million soldiers in Europe, but if the US withdraws, there will be a deficit of 300 thousand soldiers. This requires large budgets and structural integration. It is currently difficult for more than 25 armies to fight together. While the number of US bases is decreasing, the continent is establishing common defense systems against missile and UAV threats with projects such as the “European Sky Shield” led by Germany.

In the defense industry, new generation projects such as Eurodrone and Tempest are in operation. However, they are still behind Russia in ammunition production and military stocks. Moscow’s transition to a war economy and its ability to mobilize troops rapidly are putting Europe in a difficult position.

As countries such as France, Germany and Poland increase their budgets, the effort to convince the public is also growing. Turkey, on the other hand, is becoming a strategic actor in European defense with products such as Bayraktar and Hürjet. However, it is striking that it is not included in EU funds. Europe must now transition to a more integrated, more deterrent and more prepared order. This means that the era of prosperity will give way to an armed future.
