Frank Würthwein, a UC San Diego physics professor who leads SDSC’s distributed high-throughput computing activities and is executive director of the Open Science Grid, talks about how multi-messenger astronomy is advancing our knowledge of the universe. This was demonstrated in the first ever near-simultaneous observation of gravitational and electromagnetic waves generated by the collision of two neutron stars eons ago.
SDSC’s Comet supercomputer was one of the resources used for verification and analysis. As of October 2017, more than 2 million hours of computational time had been used by researchers associated with NSF’s Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) for both the latest discovery and an earlier one that earned three researchers the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics for their detection of gravitational waves as hypothesized by Albert Einstein in 1915.
