Tasting of adventures in Greece
Lake Ziros is located in the prefecture of Preveza, west of Filippiada.
It is known for its amazing natural beauty and the beautiful forest that surrounds it and is worth a hike of about 1 hour. It is 900 meters long, 600 meters wide, 70 meters deep, and 56 meters high. The springs are underground and are located to the north of the lake, 12 meters below the water surface. It is a wetland and is part of the Natura 2000 network.
In prehistoric times, it used to be a cave, which later collapsed. Next to the lake, until 1975, there was a children's village called Agios Alexandros, which housed orphans of World War II and the Civil War.
The unique clay hills of Kokkinopilos in Preveza are considered a monument of nature with significant geological value, located between the villages of Agios Georgios and Rizovouni.
They are a cluster of hills, approximately 100 to 150 metres high.
The characteristic reddish hue of the hills is due to the red clay and iron oxide-rich subsoil of the area.
This beautiful landscape resembles the valleys of the planet Mars.
The hills of Kokkinopilos are also of particular archaeological interest. Experts say that most of the findings in the area date back to the Paleolithic Age, and several of them belong to the Bronze Age as well. Among the most impressive objects is a 250,000-year-old stone axe (Archaeological Museum of Ioannina).
Kokkinopilos was also crossed by the Roman aqueduct that supplied water to ancient Nicopolis.
