Estate Zufriedenheit, also known as Contentment, was a Danish plantation in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. The plantation produced sugar and rum, and was part of a larger estate that included Peterborg.
History
1700s: The Danish plantation Zufriedenheit grew sugar cane and produced rum
1817: Arve Petersen Magens purchased the plantation
1898: The Magens family sold Zufriedenheit to Dr. P. Mortensen
1918: Arthur S. Fairchild, a New York financier, purchased 100 acres of the estate
1947: Fairchild deeded 57 acres of the land, including part of Magens Bay beach, to the people of the Virgin Islands

Estate Zufriedenheit was located in the watershed that drains into Magens Bay
Magens Bay is located on the northern (Atlantic) side of St. Thomas
Development.
Fairchild developed an arboretum behind the bay, importing hundreds of exotic plants.
Fairchild built Louisenhoj Castle on the ruins of the Zufriedenheit greathouse.
Charles (Batch) Batchelder used to put on fabulous parties and dinner parties. He was a great supporter of the U.S. Navy League. The Greens and later Batch displayed a huge lighted cross high above the top of the castle. It could be seen clearly all the way to St. Croix. Not to be undone, Al Hoffsteder who lived by the Edelman Observatory up over on Crown Mountain, would hoist a huge Star of David which could also be seen all the way to St. Croix, and like the cross can be seen also by all vessels sailing south of St. Thomas.
Arthur Fairchild was the uncle of Barbara Dupont. She was married to Irenee' Dupont.
