Andersonville is a new stage musical inspired by real people and events of the Civil War. It follows Cory, a young Irish immigrant who crosses the ocean in 1864 with his childhood friend Thomas. While Thomas heads south to Georgia, Cory plans to travel on to Wisconsin to reunite with his sister — but he never makes it out of New York. Instead, he faces the same prejudice and hardship that so many immigrants endured. In the city, he meets Daniel, a man who has escaped slavery, and their friendship opens his eyes to a deeper meaning of freedom. Inspired by Daniel’s courage and sustained by letters from his sister and his quiet faith, Cory enlists in the Union Army, determined to fight for a truer vision of America.
Captured in battle, Cory is sent to the notorious Andersonville prison camp, where survival becomes its own act of courage. There, death was a daily companion, yet even amid the suffering, men clung to faith, hope, and each other.
Through songs like From Leitrim to Fulton, Let It Rain, The Letter You’ll Never Read, and Beautiful America, the story spans Ireland to New York, war to captivity, family bonds to sacrifice. In the end, it reveals why, through struggle and hope, we are — a Beautiful America.
