Back in the years 1989 through1993, I was steeped in the business of representing football players as their agent. I specialized in their off-the-field endeavors (e.g. endorsements, speaking engagements, personal appearances, licensing, merchandising, charitable tie-ins, and publicity).
More than any one person, it was Harold “Doc” Daniels that allowed me the opportunity to shine. Doc, had been an NFL player agent for 25 years following his playing career (with the LA Rams in the early 60’s). When we met, I was serving as VP of Sports for Pro Sports and Entertainment in Beverly Hills. From the very first time that Doc and I met, we clicked.
Doc had a good number of NFL players that he represented as their agent, negotiating contracts with their respective teams. He would bring his players to me, to represent them for off-the-field dealings outside of their player contracts. It was an honor for me to team up with old Doc (his nickname came from the fact that he carried a PhD in Mathematics). After working together with Doc for a couple of years, he asked me to produce a promotional video for his organization, Professional Stars, Inc (his player representation agency).
The 38-minute video here, was the result of that effort. Doc gave me a generous budget and full creative control. He knew my work and he trusted me. I had produced publicity materials, attained several opportunities for some of his players, and had also orchestrated his 1990 Draft Day Party at the Friars Club in Beverly Hills. (Doc had four players that were drafted in the first round that year. )
A week before the 1993 Draft, once again Doc had a nice roster of clients, and he asked me if I could produce a promotional video for him to use as a recruiting tool. This was a couple of years after my days at Pro Sports and Entertainment. He told me he was having a Draft Day Party at The Sports Deli in Century City. We shook hands, and it was on.
Doc showed that video to dozens of prospective clients (with their parents) right in their own living rooms. He told me many times how much he loved the video. I recently rediscovered it on an old hard drive and thought I would share it here on YouTube.
I miss old Doc. Rest in peace old friend.
