story: (after Sonic 1) Sonic decides to train Tails how to overcome tricky obstacles, during the training Sonic is far ahead but Tails is behind and tries to catch up, he's not looking when he suddenly gets his ankle stuck in a chain and it was too late as the ball rolls down into the water. Tails wakes up in the darkness full of water, his lungs fill up, his eyes strain and he loses his last breath... When suddenly he's... alive? Due to Tails' lack of dying, he suffers forever in the dark, green, void, waiting for someone to save him from the endless pain. He decides to sing to pass the time, which awakens his soul to sing along.
