Hello, my name is Rangaraj Gopalraj. I'm a geriatrician, and it means I work with older adults.

I'm from India -- halfway around the world -- and I have very fond memories of hanging out with my grandmother. And when I grew up, joined medical school, I gravitated towards taking care of older adults with or without serious medical problems. As we age our body changes in our ability to handle medications for instance, and when you have a baby we are very careful about how much Tylenol we give, but as we grow older for some reason many people are not aware, and so older need to be treated and their care individualized. In terms of adjusting their medications, they're more prone for side effects, and as a geriatrician we are trained to pay more attention to that; and our goal, depending on where we catch people, is to try to mitigate the effects of medications, improve quality of life and make it more meaningful.

I love to treat my patients as if it is one of my own family or if I were a patient how I would like to be treated. So part of that involves treating people with kindness and also trying to break down complex medical terms into simple language so that my patients and their families leave with a sense of, "oh, I have this huge problem. What can I do about it," or things we can work on together.

My wife and I love doing things together. We are currently exploring Louisville, getting to know the city better, enjoying its parts, spending time in the riverfront and also catching a few games or concerts when we have the opportunity.
