Climbing Route Difficulty and Fatality Rate

Cho Oyu, standing at 8,188 meters, is the sixth highest peak in the world, located on the border between China and Nepal. Due to its relatively few technical challenges, it is considered the easiest of the eight-thousand-meter peaks to climb. The main climbing route is the Northwest Ridge route on the Nepal side, which shares the same base camp as the south route of Everest before diverging towards the Cho Oyu base camp.

Climbing Routes:

• Northwest Ridge Route: This route is widely regarded as one of the least difficult routes among the eight-thousand-meter peaks. Starting from the base camp, climbers traverse glaciers and snow slopes, using fixed ropes. The technical difficulty is low, with the primary challenges being the high altitude and harsh weather conditions.
• Challenges: Despite being technically straightforward, the main challenges of Cho Oyu are its height and the risk of altitude sickness. Climbers must cope with extremely low oxygen levels and cold temperatures.

Fatality Rate:

The fatality rate on Cho Oyu is relatively low, at about 1.5%. Since the first successful ascent, thousands of climbers have reached the summit, but dozens have unfortunately perished in the attempt. The main risks include avalanches, ice falls, and altitude sickness.
