After giving a general background of the concept of Non-translatables of our Dharmic tradition and the unique nature of Sanskrit language, Vid. Vrinda Acharya delineates the non-translatable nature of several key concepts related to Indian music like Nada, Shruti, Svara, Raga, Laya, Gamaka, Kala, Mela, Rasa and so on. She compares them with the popular 'so-called' English equivalents and effectively shows their inadequacy, making a strong case for retaining the original Sanskrit terms. She concludes by highlighting the importance of non-translatability for the non-digestibility of Indian/Hindu music into the Abrahamic framework.
