Traditionally, Sashiko is done on indigo-dyed cotton fabric. However, as a beginner, you can start with any tightly woven fabric, such as quilting cotton or linen. Look for something with a visible weave, as it helps guide your stitching.

Next, you'll need Sashiko thread. This special thread is thicker than regular embroidery thread and has a distinctive matte finish. You can find Sashiko thread in various colors, but the most traditional ones are white and navy blue. Be sure to choose a color that contrasts well with your fabric.

To stitch your Sashiko designs, you'll need a good set of Sashiko needles. These needles have a larger eye and a sharp point, making them perfect for working with the thicker Sashiko thread. They come in different lengths, so choose the one that feels comfortable for you.

Lastly, don't forget about the thimble! Sashiko stitching involves pushing the needle through multiple layers of fabric, and a thimble can protect your finger from getting sore. You can opt for a traditional leather thimble or choose a modern one made of silicone or metal.

That's it for the essential Sashiko supplies! Of course, there are many other optional tools and accessories you can explore as you progress in your Sashiko journey, like thread snips and fabric markers for creating your own patterns. Feel free to experiment and find what works best for you!

The below items are links to Amazon Japan. The shipping will be much higher but I find that the combined price of the shipping with the product is about the same as the product would cost purchasing in the USA. There are more kits available on Amazon Japan than the USA site.
