In this video, we explore the remains of the Silkstone Waggonway, a remarkable early 19th-century tramroad in South Yorkshire that once carried coal from the collieries around Silkstone, Huskar and Moor End down to the Barnsley Canal. Built in 1809, this pre-railway industrial transport route predates modern railways and offers a fascinating insight into the origins of Britain’s transport network.

Filmed on location, we follow the original route on foot, searching for surviving features such as stone block sleepers, bridges, inclines, embankments, a tunnel and track formations, and uncover how this historic waggonway shaped local industry, mining and settlement across the Dearne Valley. Much of the line is now hidden in woodland, behind houses, or beneath modern development – yet traces still remain under your feet.
