On September 19, 2013 the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program presented a panel discussion at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, during its annual research trip to study Civil Rights history. Distinguished panelists Margaret Block, Akinyele Umoja, and Ron Herd II added a deeper dimension to Civil Rights history as each supported the idea through personal stories or research that countering violence with violence for self-protection in African American communities during this time was far from rare.
With remarks by Delta State President Bill LaForge, University of Florida student Joanna Joseph, University of Florida Professor Paul Ortiz, and Professor Arlene Sanders of Delta State University.
