The rise of the Holy Roman Empire began with the coronation of Otto I and his alliance with Pope John XII, built on the legacy of Charlemagne and the Frankish realm. This moment marked the start of a new imperial project that sought to unite Germany, Italy, and the Roman tradition of authority. Yet this very alliance soon turned into a struggle for power between emperors and the Papacy.
At the heart of these medieval conflicts stood the Ottonians, the Salian dynasty, and the Supplinburg lineage. The most dramatic clash erupted during the Investiture Controversy between Henry IV and Gregory VII—Canossa, excommunication, and the battle over the right to appoint bishops reshaped the political landscape of Europe and strengthened the influence of German princes.
In the 12th century, the struggle intensified once more: the Hohenstaufens and Frederick I Barbarossa sought to dominate Northern Italy and challenge papal authority. But the resistance of Milan, the Italian city-states, and the Lombard League ended with imperial defeat at Legnano. Thus, the story of the rise of the Holy Roman Empire became the story of a centuries-long confrontation—for Rome, for power, and for supremacy in medieval Europe.
