Tournament paintball in Australia began to emerge in the late 1980s, not long after the sport first arrived from the United States. In its early days, most games were held in natural bushland using very basic gear, with straightforward “capture the flag” missions dominating the style of play. Growth was slow at first because paintball markers were legally classified as firearms, resulting in strict—and often inconsistent—regulations from state to state. As laws gradually became clearer and more consistent, more paintball fields opened and organised events started to appear, allowing the sport to spread across the country.
As paintball evolved worldwide, Australian players embraced a new, faster-paced format called speedball. Unlike traditional bushball, speedball is played on a compact, open field filled with inflatable bunkers arranged in a mirrored layout. This design created a quicker, more tactical game that was easier to officiate and film, laying the groundwork for formal competition. By the 1990s and early 2000s, Australia was regularly hosting state tournaments and popular series such as the Victorian Masters, helping to establish a dedicated competitive scene supported by committed teams and growing sponsorship.
Today, the Australian tournament paintball landscape is built around structured leagues and national events. The most prominent of these is the Australian Super7s Paintball Series, which began in the mid-2000s and is now considered the country’s top competitive league. Held at Action Paintball Games near Sydney, Super7s features a fast, 7-player speedball format and draws teams from all over Australia and abroad. Supporting this national platform are local clubs, regional tournaments, and state-based organisations that encourage new players to get involved and help maintain a strong, active community. What started as casual games in the bush has grown into a highly strategic, athletic, and well-organised competitive sport with a passionate and steadily growing following across Australia.
