The valley, also known as Belemedik Valley, is actually formed by the Çakıt River, an important tributary of the Seyhan River, as it flows between the Bolkar Mountains. When heading south from Pozantı to reach this area, you will travel alongside the Çakıt River and the railway line. Along the stream, which flows through steep rocks and cliffs in places, plane trees offer glimpses of green and yellow depending on the season.
An important point on Belemedik Valley is the German Spring, where clear, ice-cold water flows from inside a cave. Here, you can cross to the other side via a suspension bridge and have a picnic around the spring.
Until 1900, there was a small settlement called Karapınar in Çakıt Valley, but suddenly it turned into a huge construction site. The Germans also saw this as the most suitable place to cross the Taurus Mountains. The Çakıt River had, after all, made their work easier by eroding the mountains over millions of years. The Ottoman Empire, lagging behind the Europeans, agreed with Germany on a major project, the Baghdad Railway, in order to catch up with them. The Ottomans mobilised all their resources for this line, even using the title of caliph to gather aid from as far away as India. During the construction phase, the Germans advanced rapidly from Haydarpaşa to Konya Ereğli but were halted for many years by the Taurus Mountains. They built tunnels stretching for kilometres and structures such as the Varda Bridge, which still impresses people today. They established a magnificent town called Belemedik in this region, where they would remain for many years.
The story of where the name Belemedik came from is also interesting. During the construction of the Baghdad Railway, teams working from both sides to meet in the middle of the challenging Taurus tunnels sometimes failed to meet, calling out to each other, "Bilemedik" (We couldn't find each other), and over time, this name became Belemedik.
Until 25 years ago, access to the town was very limited except by train. A road was built parallel to the Çakıt River and the railway via Pozantı, opening up this town, which offers distinct beauty in each of the four seasons, to visitors from the region.
This charming cottage was built for some scenes in the TV series Dila Hanım, adding a unique atmosphere to Belemedik. Additionally, part of the fight scenes on the train in the film James Bond Skyfall were also filmed in Belemedik.
